Phosphate could become one of Québec's most underestimated strategic advantages

Bégin-Lamarche, Lac à Paul, LFP and Port Saguenay's proposed terminal outline an industrial-corridor option that remains unproven.

Lithium dominates most discussions of Québec's battery supply chain. Another value chain deserves more attention: phosphate.

Progress at First Phosphate's Bégin-Lamarche project, Arianne Phosphate's Lac à Paul project and interest in lithium-iron-phosphate batteries could make Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean strategically relevant to a material still rarely associated with Québec industrial policy.

A chemistry without nickel or cobalt

LFP batteries use lithium, iron and phosphate. Their chemistry reduces dependence on nickel and cobalt and can offer cost, durability and cycle-life advantages depending on the application.

That increases the potential strategic value of high-purity phosphate. Québec combines igneous resources, hydropower, industrial expertise and port access. The combination becomes an advantage only if product quality, purification, customer qualification and firm markets can be demonstrated.

Bégin-Lamarche is moving beyond the deposit alone

First Phosphate published an updated mineral resource estimate in May 2026 and is working to move beyond its 2024 PEA. Natural Resources Canada is supporting C$16.7 million of demonstration, feasibility and engineering work, alongside separate road-access and power-connection studies.

These measures do not finance a complete mine. They expose the next risk category: converting a resource into specification-grade concentrate and connecting the site to power and logistics corridors.

Lac à Paul could provide a second pillar

Arianne Phosphate is developing Lac à Paul in the same broad region. In July 2026, the company said it had shipped pilot-scale purified phosphoric acid samples to potential customers for testing, including LFP applications.

This is a proponent disclosure and qualification step, not proof of firm sales. It nevertheless shows why the regional opportunity extends beyond concentrate production.

From deposit to ecosystem

If both projects advance, the question will become which parts of the LFP chain Québec can build:

  • Concentrate and quality control.
  • Purification and phosphoric acid.
  • Cathode-active materials.
  • Shared logistics, power and infrastructure.
  • Customer qualification and binding offtake.
  • Recycling and material reintegration.

This transition from deposit to ecosystem is what can turn a natural resource into a durable industrial advantage.

Saguenay as an industrial corridor

The proposed North Shore marine terminal, hydropower, processing expertise and multiple projects give the region strategic optionality. But a “Québec phosphate-LFP corridor” remains an analytical hypothesis, not an established supply chain.

Port Saguenay explicitly connects the proposed multi-user terminal to the logistics needs of the Lac à Paul project. The terminal still remains infrastructure to be delivered, not capacity currently available to a future LFP chain.

The next milestones are observable: Bégin-Lamarche feasibility and engineering, road and power routes, qualification results, commercial commitments, processing choices, construction capital and logistics capacity.

Lithium will remain important. But one of Québec's next battery-material opportunities may begin with a less discussed element.
